Nancy Ann Mavis (1868-1945)
Nancy Ann Mavis, my great-great-grandmother, was born July 26, 1868, in Knox
County, Ohio. She was the seventh born of eight children to John and Francis (Underwood) Mavis.
We should note that Nancy Ann's obituary stated that she was born in 1868 in Jackson County, Michigan, though this
may be wrong.
On September 22, 1885, when she was seventeen years old, she married Elisher Fields
Tompkins, of English origin. The couple made their home in Boon and then in Jennings, Michigan. Their
children included:
- Pearl, b. 1889, died of scarlet fever 1898.
- Ivah, b. April 7, 1896, died 1948.
- Bessie Mae, b. May 22, 1898, d. January 1976.
- Carl.
- Jesse, d. 1937.
Nancy Ann died on October 12, 1945, in Cadillac, Michigan, where her descendants still live.
This photo is of Nancy Ann and Elisher, with baby Pearl, circa 1891. We also have photos of the Tompkins
family homestead in Boon, Michigan.
