Bertha Celette Smith, my great-grandmother, was born on August 18, 1882, in Sherman Township, Osceola County, Michigan. Her parents Charles and Liday Smith had homesteaded in Dighton, Michigan and raised a family of six (though one died at an early age). Bertha appears as a girl at home in this photo.

She married Albert Lafayette Lewis, son of her father's sister Mary Jane, in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, on August 23, 1906. They also had a family of six: Dewayne Robert (1908), Charles Leslie (1910), twins Cary Oscearo and Perry (1912), Sadie Belle (1914) and Austin Lee (1923).
