This guide attempts to link to all library job postings on the Internet, such as library school placement bulletins and library association job listings. Sites which contain general (non-library-specific) job postings are not included here, as there are plenty of other general job-hunting guides available. I got both my current and my previous jobs through postings made on the Internet. If this site helps you get an interview or obtain a position, please let me hear about it!

This website was originally created while I was conducting my own library job search during the end of 1994 and early 1995. It started out as a list of bookmarks in my computer account. At the time, I also had a job as a student assistant in the Information and Library Studies Library (ILSL) at the University of Michigan, and noticed that a lot of my fellow classmates were stopping by the library to go through classified ads in the print literature.

It was then that I thought up the idea of creating a guide to job postings in the professional literature (which is still maintained by ILSL) as well as a web-based guide containing links to library employment sites on the Internet. This original site was first posted on the website of the University of Michigan Libraries in May 1995, and contained approximately 25 links to gopher (anyone else remember those?) and web-based employment sites for librarians. Unfortunately, I no longer have a copy.

If you're curious to see what this site looked like in 1997, check out this page, courtesy of the Wayback Machine.  Pretty cool, huh?

Some older statistics:

  • Number of links, 1995: approx. 25
  • Number of links, 2001: 250+
  • Number of links, 2002: 275+
  • Number of links, 2003 to date:  400+
  • Total number of visits, 5/1/96 to 5/1/97: 32,000+
  • Total number of visits, 5/1/97 to 5/1/98: 110,000+
  • Total number of visits, 5/1/98 to 5/1/99: 148,000+
  • Total number of visits, 5/1/99 to 5/1/00: 182,000+
  • Total number of visits, 5/1/00 to 5/1/01: 210,000+
  • Total number of visits, 5/1/01 to 5/1/02:  233,000+
  • Total number of visits, 5/1/02 to 5/1/03: 274,000+

I created these pages using a combination of manual HTML tag entry (!), HotDog Professional (an HTML editor), and Microsoft Image Composer (for the graphics and banners).  Starting in 1999, I began editing this site using Microsoft FrontPage.

More info about me:
My official title is Professor, Booth Library, Eastern Illinois University. I work at the reference desk for 12 hours per week, serve as the liaison to two academic departments (and manage the book/serial budgets for these areas), and help keep the library's e-journal collections current. During the school year, I give tours, teach bibliographic instruction sessions, and give workshops to faculty and staff.  I'm also one of the system administrators for the library's new automated system, Endeavor's Voyager.

Feel free to also look at a copy of my resume, or check out my home page.
